Minister of Culture Hon. Silveria Jacobs would like via this medium to publicly pledge her support for the Be The Change and Art Saves Lives Foundations for their dedication, and dynamic vision in achieving their goals through hard work and perseverance. Both foundations are headed by young women, choice role models for our St. Maarten women and girls to look up to.

Erica Cannegieter of Be the Change Foundation and Nicole de Weever of Art Saves Lives are actively working to bring new meaning to volunteerism.

The minister commends Be the Change for challenging each and every citizen to get up and let their actions back their words – complaining about a situation can only bring awareness, taking positive action in whatever small way you can, will give each person a feeling of ownership in being part of the solution.

The Minster encourages all to either make a fixed monetary donation and/or donate your time by volunteering. Time is very valuable, and several business have already taken a giant step in allowing their employees one hour per week, biweekly or per month to volunteer time to a worthy cause.

"We should all be the change we want to see in our country," Minister Jacobs pointed out.

This month’s donations will go towards the Summer Intensive being organized by Art Saves Lives, and each month another NGO will benefit. Art Saves Lives uses the arts as a vehicle to build self-esteem, confidence and compassion in our young people while helping them to explore their own creativity.

"Nicole and Erica both strive to share their passion with all those who are willing to listen and learn. This was demonstrated in the mini show that was held at The Red Piano on Sunday showcasing young artists as well as established local artists in spoken word, singing and dancing.

"It was indeed an inspiration to be in a room filled with so much young and unharnessed talent. It definitely gives us hope.
I implore the entire population to find a way to give back to our community in whatever way you can. Support the Be the Change Foundation, Art Saves Lives and all other NGOs who take the initiative to help others," Minister Silveria Jacobs appealed to the community.
