Secondary School Volleyball Tournament was a Success

The St. Maarten Volleyball Association SIMVA brought the curtain down on yet another successful Secondary School Volleyball Tournament. This is the fourth year and each year the level of the games has improved tremendously.

 

Once again the St. Maarten Academy School girls retained the championship for the fourth year consecutively. The defending champions Milton Peters College boys also retained their title for a second year.

Minister of Sports Hon. Silveria Jacobs was on hand to address the crowd and helped with the handing out of the awards at the ceremony, which was held on Saturday, April 6, 2013 at the Roof Top Bar and Grill.

At this ceremony awards were handed out for the recently concluded school tournament and the annual senior championship which concluded in December of 2012.

In the Minister’s address, she congratulated the winners and encouraged the others to work hard to be at the top next time.

Minister Jacobs spoke directly to the youths at the gathering and commended them on their show of sportsmanship. The Minister was able to witness a limited amount of the games and was impressed to see the improved level of the play.

SIMVA President, Raymond Jacobs, thanked the sponsors who for the last four years have helped in making the school tournament a success. These sponsors are: GEBE NV, Windward Islands Bank. ORCO Bank, Bank of Nova Scotia, Paradise Inn, Builders Paradise, Travel Planners, Intermar Shipping, Divico and A&A Supply.

He also made mention of the media houses that were very instrumental in getting the games and the scores out to the public such as Rodney Richardson of Soualiga Sports, Gordon St. Luce of the Score, SXMislandtimes and a very special commendation to Steven C of PJD2 radio.

In closing, President Jacobs mentioned some of the events that SIMVA has planned for the rest of the 2013 season. The next event up-coming is the Business Tournament which is scheduled for May 3, 2013 to June 1, 2013 and will be played every Friday and Saturday during this period.

Jacobs also mentioned the visit of Coach Caffe from Brazil. This is the second visit by Coach Caffe to our island. Coach Caffe will be working closely with the local coaches and will assist them in preparing National Teams for the up-coming Junior and Youth tournaments which are scheduled to be held between July to September of this year. Also on this year’s calendar is the election for a new President and the senior tournament which is scheduled for September.
