Prime Minister Opens International Congress for Martial Arts at Maho Convention Center

Encourages King Yen School for Martial Arts Representatives

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams showed her support for the St. Maarten delegation at the 2014 International Congress of Martial Arts held at the Maho Convention Center on January 4th.

The Congress, organized by world-renowned Martial Artist Tom Shamuon, featured teams from St. Maarten, the United States and Canada. St. Maarten was represented by students from the King Yen School, under the direction of Grand master Theo Liu and featured athletes ranging in age from four to 50 years old under the theme of friendship through martial arts.

Prime Minister Wescot-Williams opened up the congress and wished participants much success in both exhibitions bouts. "I would like to welcome all delegates to St. Maarten and I encourage all of you to enjoy this island as you gather to practice your art on our beautiful island. It is also good to see so many young students practicing the Martial Arts, particularly as it develops discipline and strength of mind in especially the younger practitioners," commented Wescot-Williams, who was also presented with an honorary medal at the tournament.

Grandmaster Liu thanked the PM for her attendance and stated that this was the first time a Government official was in attendance at a similar event. "We are very happy the Prime Minister was able to come to the tournament and welcome delegates and encourage the St. Maarten team," commented Grandmaster Liu.
