On Sunday June 7th the yearly International Triathlon race organized by the “Friendly Island Cycling Association” will be held. In connection with this race a meeting was held at the Philipsburg Police Station between this association represented by Mr. Juan Pablo Piscione and representatives of the KPSM. The main topic of this meeting was to discuss the route of the race, the alternative routes that can be used when the race is taking place and the safety and security of the participants.
The race will commence at 07.00 a.m. and end at approximately 10.00 a.m. at “Taloula Mango’s” on the Board Walk. A total of approximately 100 participants will be taking part in this event. The race will consist of three different events namely a swim race in Great Bay, a cycling race to Cole bay and back to Philipsburg, and will end with a running race.
The route of the cycling race is as follows: Sint Rose Arcade – Front Street – Welvaart brug – Ch. E. W. Buncamper Road – Freedom Fighters Round About – W.J.A. Nisbeth road – Salt Pickers Round About -W.J.A.Nibeth road – Prins Bernard Brug – Bush road – Churchill Round About – A.J.C. Brouwers road- Round About top of Cole Bay hill – A.J.C. Brouwers road – Osborne Kruythoff the Traffic Man Round About – A.J.C. Brouwers Road – Round About top of Cole Bay Hill – A.J.C. Brouwers Road – Churchill Round About – Bush road – Prins Bernard Brug – W.J.A. Nisbeth road – Salt Picker Round About – W.J.A. Nisbeth Road- Freedom Fighters Round About – W.G. Buncamper Road – Welvaart Brug – Ch.E.W. Voges Street – Back Street – D.C. Steeg – Front Street and end at Sint Rose Arcade.
During the swimming race in Great bay Harbor the Coast Guard will be on patrol monitoring the situation to make sure that everything ends without incident.
During the cycling race members of the Harley Davidson Club will be assisting, while the police and volunteers will be at the intersections regulating and diverting traffic. Some intersections that are not manned will be barricaded. The Police Department warns that the removal of these barricades is strictly forbidden.
All drivers should take keen notice of this information and use alternative routes to get to and from their destination as this event may cause some minor delays. The entire community is asked to give all the necessary cooperation to make this international event a successful one.
