Prime Minister Holds Meeting with Schotte on Central Bank

Continues to stress for matters pertaining to the St. Maarten branch to be executed

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams held a videoconference with the Caretaker Prime Minister of Curacao Gerrit Schotte on issues related to the Central Bank of Curacao and St. Maarten (CBCS) on Monday. The Prime Minister was joined by Minister of Finance Roland Tuitt, Legal Advisor to the Cabinet of the Prime Minister Mr. Hensley Plantain and Policy Advisor to Minister Tuitt Mr. Xavier Blackman.

During the meeting the Prime Minister outlined St. Maarten’s Position on the Investigation and Suspension of Central Bank President Emsley Tromp and the appointment of the seventh member of the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank. St. Maarten recently received a proposal regarding the suspension of Tromp as Central Bank President from the Supervisory Board of the CBCS.

"We started off the videoconference with the Curacao Government wanting to know our position on the investigation and suspension of Tromp and the appointment of the seventh member to the Supervisory Board. The Curacao Government, which was represented at the videoconference by their Prime Minister and their Minister of Finance, said the investigation into Tromp has not yet started. Our subsequent response was that since we were not consulted on the Terms of Reference for the investigation, we could not approve those Terms of Reference", commented the Prime Minister.

The Prime Minister also stated that the Curacao Government also claims that they had left the choice of the investigating company up to the Supervisory Board of the Central Bank.

The Prime Minister also commented that St. Maarten continues to stress for the budget of the Central Bank to be approved and the matters pertaining to the St. Maarten branch to be executed. "After about an hour’s meeting it was decided St. Maarten will get the Terms of Reference and that we in turn will prepare St. Maarten’s position on those terms of reference, which Curacao will also do. Subsequently the two Governments will meet again with each other and with the Supervisory Board and management of the CBCS. This meeting has been tentatively set for Saturday and will most likely take place on Curacao," concluded the Prime Minister.
