INTERNATIONAL WOMEN’S DAY

Community Development, Gender & Humanitarian Aff./Womens Desk On International Women’s Day

International Women’s Day is celebrated on March 8th following the United Nations (U.N.) declaration for this day’s observance.

Throughout the world women’s achievements are recognized and applauded, gender issues are highlighted and initiatives are taken to promote women’s equality and to assist women in reaching their full potential.

In some countries Women’s Day is less sociopolitical and is simply an occasion for men to express their love for women in a way that resembles Mother’s Day or Valentine’s Day.

This celebration of International Women’s Day on Sint Maarten has a strong human rights focus. Each year the U.N. designates a social theme which calls for (greater) awareness of gender issues. However, countries and organizations are free to make amendments to the theme or come up with a theme which better reflects the local situation.

The Department of Community Development, Family and Humanitarian Affairs and Women’s Desk recognize the vital role women play in all facets of national development and private life, often without public recognition. International Women’s Day is the perfect opportunity to show our appreciation to all the women that have contributed and continue to contribute to their families, friends and Sint Maarten in big and smaller ways. To ensure sustainability of the different positive contributions women need to unite and work together; the Department of Community Development, Family and Humanitarian Affairs and Women’s Desk are happy to announce the theme for International Women’s Day this year: "Connecting Women, Inspiring futures".

As an effort to connect women and to provide a platform to share, cultivate and strengthen their talents the aforementioned department will be launching a women’s support network, in collaboration with key stakeholders, on March 18th upcoming, that caters to the needs of women. A network that is, for women and by women, with professional and therapeutic components.
