Prime Minister Comments at the Presentation of a Check to the University of St. Maarten

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten attended the presentation of a check for USD $25,000 from the Bank of Nova Scotia to the University of St. Maarten. The contribution will go directly towards the funding of a computer system for the registrars office for the University of St. Maarten.

"Good afternoon and welcome as you join us on this special occasion as I myself join those before me in thanking the Bank of Nova Scotia with this wonderful gesture. You, the Bank of Nova Scotia, has been constant a trailblazer in terms of being a good corporate citizen and this deserves even more special mention.

Without a doubt some of the most important areas that we have to focus on St. Maarten are education and the health of the people. Education and the health of our nation are two aspects that we must focus on as a major aspect of the development of St. Maarten as a nation. As we look forward to this development we are raising the intellectual bar for our society through providing a solid education system.

While often times we see businesses contributing to St. Maarten, I am a proponent that that type of sponsorship is channeled into education and health for the simple reasons mentioned above. And in this respect the Bank of Nova Scotia is indeed a trailblazer and my comments are thus the more pertinent and I encourage others to join the Bank of Nova Scotia in sponsoring tertiary education in order for us to ensure that the intellectual development of both young and old are looked after in our country.

Thank you once again and congratulations to all concerned and I wish you much strength as you continue to chart the course for the University of St. Maarten, and by charting the course for the University you chart the course for Country St. Maarten. So once again much success; it has not been an easy journey but with gestures like this one here this afternoon this is a solid step towards the refocusing of the University of St. Maarten."
