Sheer Art Gallery is scheduled to open on Saturday evening, May 7, 2011, with a gala debut, featuring recent artworks by celebrated island artist, Sir Roland Richardson. The gallery will be opened daily from 11:00 AM to 3:00 PM and from 5:00 PM – 9:00 PM and will be closed on Sundays.

"Sheer Art Gallery opening at 44 Front Street is intended to add to the variety of enterprises in downtown Philipsburg, that make our capitol special", the new gallery owner, Valentine Davis stated. "Sir Richardson, who has been knighted by Her Majesty, Queen Beatrix and has often been referred to as the Father of Caribbean Impressionism, and being one of my favorite artists since our first meeting in 1979, is the ideal artist for the inaugural exhibition at Sheer Art Gallery," says Mr. Davis.

The gallery and exhibition will be open to island residents and tourists, all of whom are welcome.

Mr. Davis also indicated that arrangements will be made for students of the various high schools to view the exhibition and meet Sir Richardson.

Sir Roland Richardson is a renowned and respected artist, whose contribution to the realm of contemporary "Plein Air" Impressionism is recognized in the world of art internationally.

He has exhibited in over 100 one-man and group shows in Museums, major Trade Centers and Fine Art Gallery shows and his artworks have earned serious recognition among art collectors throughout the past 45 years of Sir Richardson’s professional endeavors. Featured by various periodicals that include Caribbean Travel and Life, Island Magazine, Robb Report, the Washington Post, American Airline Latitudes, and Elle, Sir Richardson shares the following thoughts about the upcoming show:

"The opening of a gallery in Philipsburg by our esteemed colleague, Valentin Davis, is a significant contribution to St. Maarten’s cultural and tourism development. We’re proud to encourage this effort and have worked hard to organize an exhibition that will delight the audience, with new creations to debut on this historic occasion. My work focuses on two principle concerns: painting on location – en "Plein Air"- from life, and with a primary focus on color as the subject. Color is a substance out of which the world that we see is made. It is the visible manifestation of the invisible."

Sheer Art Gallery is located at 44 Front Street (formerly Callaloo Restaurant), in the Promenade Mall, opposite Horizon Hotel and the shopping district of Holland House Hotel and the Catholic Church.
