KINGSTOWN, St. Vincent – Destructive bowling, led by West Indies Women’s fast bowler Shamilia Connell, helped Barbados defy the weather and catapult to the top of the standings, following a six-wicket victory over previously unbeaten hosts Windward Islands in the Women’s Regional Super50 Tournament yesterday.
Connell collected 4-15 from six overs to lead the Barbadian bowling, as the Windwards were bowled out for 83 in 24.3 overs, after they were put in to bat in the top-of-the-table, fourth round clash at the Arnos Vale Sports Complex.
After the match as reduced to 27 overs-a-side, due to rain, the Windwards’ innings was propped up by a top of score of 26 from Nerissa Crafton and 25 from Quiana Joseph, as they rescued their side from 15 for six in the 10th over with a 58-run stand for the seventh wicket.
But dynamic Windies Women’s all-rounder Deandra Dottin bowled Crafton in the 22nd over and this triggered the collapse of the rest of the batting.
Dottin ended with 2-16 from four overs with her fast-medium bowling and Shakira Selman, the Barbados captain and Windies Women’s medium-fast bowler, took 2-8 from six overs to help complete the demolition of the home team’s batting.
Kyshona Knight, a Windies Women’s batsman, then led the chase for the visitors with 28 not out and Windies Women’s starlet Hayley Matthews made 24 before Windies Women’s leg-spinner Afy Fletcher, the Windwards captain, sent a few nerves through the Barbadian batting with 3-19 from 4.5 overs.
At Park Hill: Karishma Ramharack made the most of the sunshine to keep defending champions Trinidad & Tobago within reach of the front two with an eight-run victory over Jamaica.
In a contest reduced to 24 overs-a-side, due to rain, Ramharack snared 3-10 from five overs to derail her opponents’ chase and the Jamaicans were bowled out for 103 off the final ball of their innings.
Feeble batting again proved the undoing of the Jamaicans, as none of their batsmen reached 20, including batting star and incumbent Windies Women’s captain Stafanie Taylor, who was bowled for three to become Ramharack’s first scalp.
Earlier, Reniece Boyce had anchored T&T with a top score of 31, as they reached 111 for eight from their allocation of 24 overs, after they were sent in to bat.
Left-arm spinner Shanel Daley was the pick of the Jamaica bowlers with 3-15 from four overs and Taylor took 2-31 from four overs.
At Sion Hill: International Subrina Munroe and Akaze Thompson undermined Leeward Islands’ batting and set up Guyana for a seven-wicket victory.
Munroe grabbed 3-10 from four overs and Thompson added 3-14 from 4.4 overs, as the Leewards were bundled out for 41 in 17.4 of the rain-reduced 24 overs, after they were put in to bat.
No Leewards batsman reached 20, the same for Guyana, whose chase was completed in the 16th over with little to no trouble for their first victory of the tournament.
