The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams presented copies of the works of esteemed Nobel Laureate and one of Latin America and the Caribbean’s most beloved and acclaimed writers Gabriel García Márquez to the Library and to schools last week. The Foreign Minister of Colombia María Ángela Holguín Cuéllar presented the books to the Prime Minister at last February’s ACS meeting and the PM subsequently donated them to the library and schools on the island; “On the 30th April I was honoured to represent Sint Maarten at the 6th Summit of the Heads of States and Governments of the Association of Caribbean States (ACS). One of the key points coming out of this meeting was the need for greater recognition and appreciation of Caribbean perspectives, accentuating the many talents and culturally significant work of our academics, scholars, and artists.

“With this in mind, I have made available copies of the works of Caribbean Nobel Prize laureate, novelist, and screenwriter the late Gabriel García Márquez to the library and schools . Sint Maarten has received 54 books in English and 30 books in Spanish to be shared including the famous ‘Love in Time of Cholera’ and ‘One Hundred Years of Solitude’. It is the desire of the Minister of Foreign Affairs of Colombia that the work of this celebrated man and his colorful and poignant reflections of life in the Caribbean be read, appreciated, and embraced by all students of our region,” concluded Prime Minister Wescot-Williams.
