Leaders from the Mohican Scout goup of Scouting Antiano Sint Maarten spend a day at their Club house in Retreat Estate for a training camp under the leadership of former Scoutmaster Jeff Sugrue from Black Hills Council, Boy Scouts of America-South Dakota. The day was a fun filled and extremely educational experience for all participants. During the training several scouting-skills related subjects were covered such as hiking, camping, whipping, tying and lashing, fire site preparation, fires for cooking and campfires. Also subjects such as wildlife skills and how to use a knife and ax and other scout equipment was covered. Attention was also put on safety and safety measures.
The aim of the workshop was to bring the leaders to the level of the scouts by having them practicing their skills by acting and working together in troops as if they were scouts themselves. His philosophy is that scouting is fun and any leader should make each day of scouting a fun experience that appeal to the youth. With this training the scout leaders are now well prepared to start the new year of scouting with the youth of Sint Maarten.
Scouting is a grassroots educational youth movement that is truly bottom-up in its structure and approach in engaging young people from all over the world. Through peer-to-peer leadership, supported by adults, the Mohican Scout Group embraces the same set of values of the World Organization illustrated in the Scout Promise and Law and follows an internationally accepted system of non-formal education suited to the unique aspects of our local community.
The Mohican Scout group through its membership with Scouting Antiano is a member of the World Organization of the Scout Movement (WOSM); an independent, worldwide, non-profit and non-partisan organization which serves the Scout Movement. Its purpose is to promote unity and the understanding of Scouting’s purpose and principles, while facilitating its expansion and development. The organs of the World Organization are the World Scout Conference,
the World Scout Committee and
the World Scout Bureau.
Scouting Antiano takes this opportunity to invite the youth of Sint Maarten to join our club and the Scout movement. Ms. Merlyn Schaminee-Miguel, District Commissioner and Mohican Group Leader, sends a call out to parents to stimulate their children to join. The group meets every Saturday from 9.00 till 12.00 at their clubhouse in Retreat Estate.
