In the coming months structural works will be carried out at the Catholic primary school Golden Rock School on St. Eustatius.
The Rijksgebouwendienst selects a local contractor for this job.
The renovation work on the Golden Rock School started in October 2013. At the end of February 2014, the work was stopped by the Rijksgebouwendienst, on behalf of the Public Entity St. Eustatius and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). This was because of concerns on the island about the safety of the school building.
In recent months the Rijksgebouwendienst has checked which additional constructive measures can be taken. The basic principle is that the school has to be earthquake-and hurricane-resistant. The meetings with the contractor of the renovation about the implementation of the constructive measures, did not lead to consensus. A local contractor will be selected for this specific work. It is expected that the work will be carried out in the third quarter of 2014.
The renovation of the Golden Rock School is one of the projects that will be realized as part of the Education Accommodation Plan 2012-2015 St. Eustatius. This plan was signed on October 10th, 2012 by the Public Entity of St. Eustatius and the Ministry of Education, Culture and Science (OCW). The aim is to improve the quality of the school buildings on St. Eustatius.
