On Saturday, October 5, 2013, fourth and fifth grade students from fourteen schools on the island participated in the Third Annual Rotary/Rotaract Seven Seas Spelling Bee.
In this preliminary round, participants were given twenty words to write on a sheet of paper. They were given 30 seconds to write each word.
Participants received a point for each word which was correctly spelt and after the judges tallied the total scores, ten qualifiers were named.
The ten qualifiers will go on to the semifinals on Saturday, October 12 where they will be requested to stand and spell the words for the public.
The ten qualifiers are Joseph Ninosu of Montessori School, Rashika Ramchandani and Eshita Wadhwa of MAC Browlia Maillard Campus, Riya Baharani, Rohan Goswami andSahil Khatnani of Learning Unlimited, Diya Sachdev and Nathan Casimir of MAC John A.Gumbs Campus, Zeynep Akyurt of Hillside Christian School and Jonesia Martimbor of St. Dominic’s School
Rotary Club St. Maarten Mid Isle would like to wish all qualifiers much success in the upcoming rounds.
The school with the most supporters over the course of the spelling bee will also receive a prize. Rotary Club St. Maarten Mid Isle would like to encourage as many people as possible to come out and support their schools as the students compete not only on an individual basis but also as a school.
