The United Volleyball Club (UVC) will be hosting its 7th annual summer camp this year from July 30 – August 4 at the St. Maarten Academy PSVE gym in Ebenezer. Participants will be grouped in two age categories: 6 – 12 and 13 – 18 for boys and girls, and the daily activities run from 9:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m.
Since 2004, when the UVC Youth Program started, the members have participated in an annual camp, either off-island or on-island. In either case, the camp usually includes hikes, a beach day, tours of historical and cultural sites, educational sessions, report-writing, in addition to the theoretical and practical volleyball activities.
For the first time this year, youngsters from abroad have expressed an interest in participating in the camp. “This should also give the St. Martin students the opportunity to mingle with and learn from student s with another culture and a different volleyball experience, as is done when we travel abroad for the camp,” said Rhoda Arrindell, UVC Youth Program coordinator.
Also, new this year, there will be workshops for specific areas of volleyball (setters, middle-blockers, libero, etc.), held in the evenings. These sessions will be open to members from other teams and the general public at a fee of US$ 5.00 per session.
The fee for the daily activities is US$ 55.00 or NAF 100.00, which includes T-shirts, a meal, and snacks. Interested persons can register for the camp and other UVC activities through Keishan at 550-3435 or Rhoda at 520-1136 or rrarindell@hotmail.com. The deadline for payment is July 15, and participants will be chosen on a first-come, first-served basis as space is limited in each category.
In aid of the youngsters, UVC will be holding another fundraising car wash and food sale on Saturday, July 28 on the grounds of Kooyman hardware store, starting from 9:00 a.m. to 4:00 p.m., and UVC is requesting the public to come out and support the youngsters.
