Heritage Essay Contest Registration Ongoing

The Department of Culture within the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth and Sports (MECYS), “through the Honorable Minister Jacobs ‘2013-2023 Decade of Revitalizing our Natural and Cultural Heritage’ campaign”, officially launches its First Interscholastic Essay Competition on Intangible Heritage. The Department aims to encourage and reward young students in various aspects of culture and the arts i.e. in the field of literary arts and creative writing and expressions.

 

The topic of the Essay Competition is “In keeping with the UN themes of Recognition, Justice and Development & students are to describe the global impact of people of African descent from their perspective, as St. Maarten has recognized that the United Nations (UN) has declared 2015-2024 the “International Decade of  People of African Descent.

 

The competition will be held amongst St. Maarten’s secondary schools  juniors and seniors (forms 3 to 5  or grades 9 to 12) under the age of 19.

Pre-university students are  also allowed to participate and the deadline to register and submit all essays is Friday, April 22, 2016.

 

The department of Culture  strongly urges all schools both public, subsidized and private to assist their students with registering and participating. Please contact the Department of Culture to register and to request further information.
