ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – The West Indies Cricket Board today extended birthday greetings to West Indies batting legend, Sir Everton Weekes.
In offering best wishes to Sir Everton on behalf of the directors, management and staff, Chief Executive Officer of the WICB Michael Muirhead said: “Greetings on your birthday, Sir Everton! You have reached a new milestone. All of us at the WICB join in wishing you ‘Happy Birthday’ and express our appreciation and admiration for all you have accomplished.
“We hope you have a pleasant day with just enough celebrating to have fun, but not enough to cause any wrinkles, and may it bring you countless happiness. We are confident you will continue to even greater heights and we want you to know how much we appreciate you.”
Everton DeCourcy Weekes was born on February 26, 1925, in Pickwick Gap, Barbados, the community adjoining the famous Kensington Oval, where he made his debut on January 21, 1948. He played four of his 48 Tests for West Indies at the ground and scored 4,455 runs at a healthy average of 58.61 in his Test career which concluded a decade later.
Along with childhood friend Sir Frank Worrell and their fellow Barbadian Clyde Walcott, they were known as “the Three Ws”. The three were all born within 18 months of each other and within a mile of Kensington Oval, and they were the outstanding West Indies batsmen of the 1950s.
Following his legendary career, Sir Everton was made a Knight Commander of the Order of St. Michael and St. George, the second highest national honour in his native Barbados, two decades ago for his services to the game.
