Visits St. Maarten Academy and PSVE
President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell for the New Year, kicked off two secondary school information and awareness sessions about the role of the House of Parliament.
The President visited 4th form Social Studies students from the St. Maarten Academy of teacher Kenneth Cook. Arrindell also visited the PSVE under the guidance of Solange Duncan.
President Arrindell is of the opinion that the youth especially secondary school students should have knowledge about the role and functioning of the House of Parliament since Sint Maarten is a parliamentary democracy.
"Our young people will reach the age of 18, and will have the right to vote. They should be aware of how the system works, and how important Parliament is in shaping the future of the country. Those in the primary school system, especially fifth and sixth graders should also be aware of our parliamentary democracy.
"The youth are our future and we have the responsibility to inform them about our institutions of Government. I made it one of my cornerstones of policy to invite the schools back in 2010/11, and will continue to inform and enlighten our young people," President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell said on Wednesday.
The President is scheduled to visit St. Maarten Academy next month for Black History Month where her presentation to students will be about comparing and contrasting the Island Council with Parliament.
