The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams and the management and staff of St. Maarten Optical donated specialized protective eyewear to the Philipsburg bike patrol at a ceremony on Friday afternoon.
Every year St. Maarten Optical chooses a group from within the community that it feels gives a special service to give a donation to. This year, in cooperation with Prime Minister Wescot-Williams, the decision was made to make a donation of specialized protective sunglasses to the Philipsburg Bike Patrol. Some thirty officers were given the Oakley brand 100% UV protected polycarbonate wrap-around sunglasses to protect from sun, dust, glare and debris they might encounter while in the field protecting the population of and visitors to St. Maarten.
The Prime Minister congratulated both St. Maarten Optical for their work as well as thanked the police officers for their continued service to the people of St. Maarten: "Allow me to use this opportunity to congratulate the management and staff of St. Maarten optical with this wonderful presentation once again. This is a commitment that Mr. and Mrs. Heemskerk have made in terms of donating to the community of St. Maarten in, amongst other places the schools of the island. It was through these school donations where the initial discussions were had with me in order to make this presentation possible today. I think that the selection of the bike patrol officers for the receipt of this type of protective eyewear is important and necessary considering the important work they do keeping the population safe. To the officers I would like to also say congratulations and thank you for your service and I hope with this donation your work in protecting the population of St. Maarten is a little easier," commented the Prime Minister.
