Prime Minister Wescot-Williams Satisfied with AUC Expansion

Scholarships to USM and AUC Part of Government Agreement to be Granted Soon

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten expressed her satisfaction at the completion of the new wing of the AUC Medical School and announced that the first scholarships for St. Maarteners to both attend the University of St. Maarten and the AUC will be granted in the coming weeks.

"The Government is quite pleased with the fact that that construction of the AUC School of medicine took place. We are pleased because the story of the AUC on St. Maarten goes back a few years after the campus relocated to St. Maarten from Montserrat with the decision being taken to make St. Maarten the permanent location. When the Medical School was taken over by DeVry University the vision for the school was a two-phased expansion to the tune of 30 million dollars and Government entered into an agreement with the school. That agreement included things like utilizing as much as possible, and informing government of, local contractors, sub-contractors and local suppliers in constructing the school. This is a documented agreement that we had with the University. This document also including scholarships for attending the University of St. Maarten and also to attend AUC and for local students to receive a medical degree at the medical school. Seeing this expansion realized was a proud moment generally speaking and to see the realization of scholarships I was very happy and I hope the first medical scholarship to a St. Maartener will be announced soon as well. We need to realize that as a country these type of activities and initiatives can do much for us in terms of further growth for our country and it is important to realize how interlinked these activities are and what they mean to the further growth of St. Maarten, commented the Prime Minister.
