In response to the numerous incidents of looting that took place after hurricane Irma last September, UNICEF in collaboration with the Ministry of Education, Culture, Youth & Sport launched its Too COOL to loot campaign. In a first of its kind activity for the campaign, young St. Maarten designers had the opportunity to enter a contest which sought to identify a logo that would represent the campaign. 18-year-old Xochiquetzal Li Gonzalez Toro emerged as the successful applicant whose logo design was chosen to represent the campaign. Xochiquetzal was awarded with a USD 250 gift certificate in art supplies at Office One Art Store, a gift certificate for Adobe Photo Shop, Illustrator or InDesign classes at the Learning Ladder and a gift certificate for 3 art classes with artist Tim Dowling at The Art House.
The logo contest was launched by the Too COOL to loot Campaign on May 14th, 2018. The three-week long submission period attracted several participants on the island aged 2 years to 18 years. All submissions were vetted by a jury of professional designers and the Head of Culture Department, Ms. Clara Reyes, through transparent sessions that ultimately produced a winner.
The official Too COOL to loot logo will be featured on communication materials and publications throughout the year along with a tag of the winner’s name.
