On October 14th, 15th, and 16th a seminar will be held on Bonaire for the FIUs of Aruba, Curacao, the Caribbean Netherlands and Sint Maarten under the title “The Power of Together”.
The task of the FIUs in the various countries is to receive reports on unusual financial transactions. After analysis these reports can be declared to be suspicious and can be delivered to the criminal investigation authorities in the countries concerned, which will subsequently investigate them. Of course it is of great importance that these agencies work closely together and can share their information.
During the seminar they will therefore discuss promoting cooperation; this will be emphasized by signing a memorandum of understanding.
At the same time representatives of the Public Prosecution, the police, the Fiscal Information and Investigation Service, Customs, Royal Military Police (Koninklijke Marechaussee) and the Coast Guard will be present in order to improve cooperation with these agencies.
Eventually this cooperation should have a positive impact on tackling crime, money laundering and the financing of terrorism in particular.
