Prime Minister Congratulates Library on 90th Birthday

The Service the Library has provided is unmissible in the Community and integral to the development of the Country

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams congratulated the management and staff of the Philipsburg Jubilee Library on their 90th Birthday celebration which will be celebrated over the weekend.

The Prime Minister remarked that the service the library provides is central to the development of St. Maarten as a nation: "The Library fulfills a very important function in the community as a center of learning, a national library and archive and an institution that fosters the intellectual development of our people. It is an area where learning, reading and the development of the collective mind is being fostered. And for this very reason the library is unmissible in our community," commented the Prime Minister.

The Philipsburg Jubilee Library was founded on the 23rd of November 2 1923 through and was further developed through the initiative W.R. Plantz, C.M. Darrell, C.C.G. Philipszoon, A.C. Wathey and C.A. Beaujon with the first books being purchased with donated money. The library has since then grown to have a collection of almost 63,000 items, 15 employees and approximately 6,000 members, with 126,000 books checked out annually.

"Once again a very warm congratulations going on to the management and staff of the Philipsburg Jubilee Library. I urge the community to go out and support your Library and recognize its importance in our community," concluded the PM.
