Cricket St. Maarten is pleased to inform you that 13 year old Daniel Doram and 15 year old Shaquille Martina have been selected to the 2011 Leeward Islands Under 19 team that will be participating in the West Indies U-19 Tournament in Guyana from July 18th to August 16th.
Doram has more than likely become the youngest ever cricketer in the history of regional U-19 cricket to represent his country in the tournament. Martina last year become the youngest from St. Maarten at 14 years to represent the Leeward Islands U-19. Both players were part of the Leeward Islands U-15 team in the recently concluded WICB Under15 Tournament in Trinidad. Martina was amongst the top run scorers for the Leeward Islands and Doram was the leading wicket taker for the Leewards. Both players will join the Leeward Islands team directly from Trinidad.
When contacted for comment, the parents of Duram (Jonah & Gilbertha Doram) were very happy with the accomplishment of their son. Martina’s mother Michelle Martina was also happy that her son was reselected to the LI U19 team, she is confident of his chances of doing well this year after a broken foot ended his participation early in last year’s tournament.
Cricket St. Maarten wishes the players much success in the tournament and also express thanks to the sponsors who over the years have contributed to the youth cricket development program on St. Maarten. Present Coach Rishi Singh also came in for high praise on the accomplishment of the young players while recognition is also due to former Coach Keith Carty and others who contributed towards the development of these players.
