The Department of Community Development, Family & Humanitarian Affairs joins in this commemoration as we also embrace the UN Principles for older persons, which aims to ensure that priority attention be given to the situation of older persons by addressing their independence, participation, care, self –fulfillment and dignity.

The department is also pleased to announce that at the newly established Help Desk for Elderly & Disabled at Hope Estate these principles will be addressed and also the mission of the helpdesk will be carried out; which is to empower the elderly, the disabled and their families in order for them to be active members of the St. Maarten community.

The above will be done by collaborating with the various NGO’s and GO’s that provide care to the elderly and disabled as well as needed information, education and outreaches.

Let us as a people give recognition and remember our elders who have toiled this land which today we are privileged to occupy and reap the fruits of their labour.
