WILLEMSTAD — More than six-hundred people had applied for a job with Hyatt during the past days. The resort at Sta. Barbara, which will open its doors in January, has three-hundred vacancies during the first phase. The personnel should increase to more than four-hundred during the second phase. Hyatt states that it will engage 98 percent of the new employees locally.

"Everything is still running on schedule", said spokesperson Frans Heiligers. The construction workers, numbering three- to four-hundred as well, are currently busy with the final strokes and furnishings of the first 160 rooms. On the outside, the landscaping is shaping up as well as the golf course, which is growing greener by the day. "The golf course will be ready at the same time", said Heiligers. The opening date is scheduled for January 19th.
Transportation
As personnel will be requested to park at the entrance of Sta. Barbara where public transportation is also available, they will have to take a shuttle bus from there to the hotel at Barbara Beach. The hotel sector, and in particular the holiday resorts at Jan Thiel, have argued in favor of a revision of the route network for some time now, so that personnel could come and leave work much quicker.
In particular, the junctions Punda and Otrobanda cause delays. Hotel association Chata had recently argued in favor of creating one central junction at Buena Vista, the headquarters of ABC Bus Company.
"We are looking for people for a wide range of functions", general manager Diego Concha told World Broadcast, "from reception and doorman to food & beverage, and from events, housekeeping and sales to culinary". There are also vacancies for the new management team. Approximately 80 percent of the managers for the hotel have been engaged already. The other 20 percent are now given the opportunity to apply. According to Concha, there is a good balance in the team between foreign Hyatt-managers and people from the island. "With an opening such as this one, we usually go through a phase where the Hyatt-system is taught to a new group of people", Concha continues. "We bring Hyatt’s expertise to the island in order to set up the company here. During a later stage, the people that are currently being trained as number 2 will be able to move up to the management position of number 1."
In order to describe the Hyatt-culture, Concha refers to his own experience within the company. Concha, originally from Columbia, has been employed with the American hotel chain since the last 21 years, "and Hyatt has found a way to enhance someone’s strongest points and appreciate the characteristics of a culture, which is what we always aspire after".
