Wednesday August 12, 2009 marks International Youth Day. Since 1999, August 12th has been set aside by the United Nations for the observance of International Youth Day.
It is an opportunity for people all over the world to reflect on the challenges and accomplishments of the world’s youth, and to develop creative solutions to local, regional and international challenges. It is therefore no coincidence that this year’s theme for International Youth Day is ‘Sustainability: Our Challenge; Our Future’.
Today, the St. Maarten Youth Council Association is pleased to introduce fifteen young St. Maarteners who have accepted the challenge of excellence. In their individual lives, they have chosen not to settle for less. They have understood the message, that mediocrity destroys; but that striving to be the very best that you can be develops strength of character. They are not daunted by the challenges and the naysayers; they do not cower in the face of adversity. But with personal conviction and a firm belief in themselves, they persevere to excel.
If we are to become a strong country, that will stand tall among the league of nations, we must develop citizens willing to accept the challenge of excellence. It is the only way to secure our future.
We applaud the 2009 St. Maarten Outstanding Youth Awards finalists: Edwin Der Weer Jr., Leshawn Brown, Chardonnay Martes, Lavern Vlaun, Devon Stapleton, Riginson Antoine, Pravina Daryanani, Martine Loubser, Bert Jno Baptiste, Rikita Budhrani, Abigail West, Roxanne Constanza, Nilesh Dialani, Khimouy Antoine and Janushka Muhki. It is our hope that others will see their accomplishments and dare to excel.
Parents and leaders, the challenge is also extended to you to lead by example. Show our children and young people the path to excellence. Never let them be ashamed of who they are, but show them who they have the potential to become. Each of us can achieve greatness in our own special way. Encourage and motivate our young people to take advantage of the opportunities life presents them. Even the setbacks can be springboards to success.
Join us on Saturday August 15, 2009 at 7 pm at the Carl’s Unique Inn as we celebrate the accomplishments of our young people who choose excellence. Tickets for the St. Maarten Outstanding Youth Awards are available at Van Dorp Bookstores, the Rupert I Maynard Youth Community Center or by calling 555-8971. Admission is only $ 15.00. Come on out and Accept the Challenge of Excellence.
Happy International Youth Day!
