Younger Chanderpaul extends Jags’ lead against Pride, Ramdin stands between Red Force collapse against Volcanoes, Campbell inches Scorpions closer to victory against Hurricanes
ST. JOHN’S, Antigua – Gritty batting, led by Tagenarine Chanderpaul, tightened the grip of newly-crowned champions Guyana Jaguars on their Digicel 4-Day Championship match against Barbados on Saturday.
Chanderpaul, the son of former WINDIES captain Shivnarine Chanderpaul, hit an unbeaten half-century to bat the Jaguars into a superior position on the third day of their ninth-round match at Kensington Oval.

Denesh Ramdin continued to his solid form with the bat, stroking his third half-century of the season to move to the brink of 700 runs for the season, but Trinidad & Tobago Red Force still faced a huge challenge to save their match against Windward Islands Volcanoes at the Grenada National Stadium.
And, an all-round effort from WINDIES “A” Team opener John Campbell overshadowed a career-best spell from Sheeno Berridge to put Jamaica Scorpions on the brink of victory against Leeward Islands Hurricanes at Sabina Park.
Jaguars (297) & 154-4 vs Pride (199) in Bridgetown, Barbados
The younger Chanderpaul was unbeaten on 66 when bad light stopped play 20 minutes past the scheduled close with the Jaguars holding an overall lead of 252.
The younger Chanderpaul, whose 197-ball innings in just under five hours includes a mere five boundaries, shared solid stands of 44 with fellow left-handed opener Chanderpaul Hemraj for the first wicket and 73 with Vishaul Singh for the third wicket.
West Indies Under-19 World Cup winner Chemar Holder has been the most successful Pride bowler with 3-56 from 18 overs.
Earlier, West Indies fast bowler Kemar Roach hit the top score of 51, as the Pride surrendered a first innings lead of 98, when they were bowled out about 66 minutes after play started half-hour earlier, due to time lost on the first two days because of rain.
Roach shared a rear-guard of 52 for the eighth wicket with Jomel Warrican that offered Pride hope of reaching the 200-run mark and earning a batting point, but they fell agonisingly short.
Romario Shepherd was the pick of the Jaguars bowlers, grabbing 5-40 from 14 overs, and Keemo Paul snapped up 2-41 from 15.5 overs.
Volcanoes (366) vs Red Force (172) & 93-2 (following on) in St. George’s, Grenada
Ramdin, the Red Force captain, gathered a resolute 75, but it was not enough to prevent his side from being forced to follow on 194 runs behind.
Not for the first time this season however, the 32-year-old Ramdin rescued the visitors. He faced 182 balls and struck seven fours, but more importantly, anchored two key partnerships to push Red Force past 150.
Ramdin put on 51 for the sixth wicket with Steven Katwaroo and 46 for the seventh wicket with Imran Khan.
The resistance ended with Khan’s departure, as Red Force lost their last four wickets for 18 runs, with Ramdin ninth out with his fourth century of the campaign in sight.
Ramdin, a former WINDIES captain, now has 695 runs for the season – the second highest aggregate for the 2017-18 season.
Needing an improved batting effort the second time around, Red Force were again in early trouble, losing Jeremy Solozano and Ewart Nicholson cheaply, but left-handed opener Amir Jangoo has carried them with an unbeaten 58, sharing an unbroken third-wicket stand of 62 with Yannic Cariah.
Scorpions (197) & (235) vs Hurricanes (171) & 159-6 in Kingston, Jamaica
Campbell followed up a valuable second innings half-century with 3-12 from eight overs with his uncomplicated off-spin to undermine the Hurricanes batting, as they pursued a victory of 262.
WINDIES “A” teammate Damion Jacobs, the wrecker-in-chief of the Hurricanes first innings, supported with 2-68 from 20 overs with his leg-spin, as the visitors failed to build on a half-century from Test wicketkeeper/batsman Devon Thomas and 45 from WINDIES “A” opener Montcin Hodge.
Thomas scored 52, Hodge made 43 and Akeem Saunders added 22, but no other batsman reached 20, as the Hurricanes lacked stability apart from an opening stand of 43 between Hodge and WINDIES opener Kieran Powell, and 49 between Hodge and Thomas.
Earlier, Berridge snapped up 5-59 from 14.1 overs to complete the demolition of the Scorpions second innings, after the hosts continued from their overnight 182 for seven.
There was token resistance from the Scorpions’ tail and they were bowled out inside the first hour of play, with Berridge capturing the last three wickets.
