World Social Worker’s Day Lecture

In observation of  World Social Work’s Day, March 21th, the St Maarten Social Workers Association will be hosting a lecture/presentation.  This year’s event will be highlighting third pillar of the Global agenda for Social Work and Development under the theme : ‘Promoting Community and Environmental Sustainability’. The event will be held at the Belair Community Center from 7-9 pm, keynote address will be delivered by the renowned Social Work lecturer and community development specialist  Mrs. Aldene Shillingford  from the University of the West Indies(UWI) Mona Campus in Jamaica. Mrs Shillingford has been a lecturer in the Social Work Programme in the Department of Sociology, Psychology and Social Work at the UWI Mona, Jamaica since 2003. She holds a MSW in Social Word and is presently pursuing the MPhil/PhD in Sociology at the UWI. She comes with in-depth experience in teaching, practice and research in areas of community development. Both her social planning and community practice courses include exercises and assignments which ultimately assist community organizations and state agencies to find and devise solutions to challenges they maybe encountering.

 

Through her efforts several communities have obtained funding and one rural community in particular has won the coveted Michael Manley Foundation Award for Community Self-Reliance. She is in project management and grassroots community development in Jamaica and the wider Caribbean; is extensively involvement in conducting programme and project evaluations; grant writing and training of trainers to undertake development work.

 

As an association we are enthusiastic about hosting Mrs. Shillingford on World Social Work day. We look forward in great anticipation the presence of the general public, NGO’s, Community Councils, those involved community work, grassroots programs, development of human capital as well as those that are dedicated to protecting our communities and the environment.
