STENAPA works independent of any political ideology

Oranjestad – Sint Eustatius National Parks (STENAPA) works independent of any political ideology, political party or religion. We work with everyone who shares the same goal of conservation of the natural heritage on Statia. On land as well as in the sea”, says dr. Teresa Leslie, president of the board of STENAPA.

Leslie’s statement comes after suggestions in radio shows on Statia and in a recent Island Council meeting, that STENAPA is closely connected with one political party in the Netherlands and that the director of STENAPA is working for the civil service in the Netherlands.

Dr. Leslie states that the director has never been an employee of the Dutch civil service during her working career. “In fact, we hired the director because of her extensive experience and track record in non-governmental organizations (NGO’s) and nature conservation.  The director is not active in any political party, neither is she a member of a political party. The board makes resolutions about who to hire in total independency. Without contact of consultation with governments or companies whatsoever”.

Dr. Leslie says STENAPA is looking forward to continue working with the government of Statia. “We have been working for nearly 30 years quite successfully on nature conservation on the island. Nature conservation and economic development go together. Due to our dedicated staff, the majority of whom are local Statians, we are working hard on multiple projects. There is so much positive news to share. Let’s continue on that path”.
