Law Enforcement Council notes positive developments in the rehabilitation of adults by SJIB

A majority of recommendations made in a 2013 report on adult rehabilitation have received adequate follow-up. This is the general conclusion of the Law Enforcement Council in a recent review-study on the topic of adult rehabilitation (including probation and parole) in St. Maarten.

In addition, the Council notes that adequate steps have been taken for the implementation of the remaining recommendations.

Taking into consideration the developments in and by the organizations involved as well as initiatives undertaken by the ministry of Justice, the Council lauds the diligence in dedicating more attention towards adult rehabilitation. Not limited to, but especially noted are the efforts made by the SJIB to redress the unsuccessful completion of community service orders and to continue to increase the knowledge and expertise of their staff. In addition the registration of client files has been automated.

Pursuant to the Kingdom Act on the Law Enforcement Council, the Minister of Justice has been given the opportunity to send the relevant advices of the Council to Parliament within six weeks, along with his policy response.
