Island Gems donates projector to SXM Santé

Island Gems Charity Foundation continues its support to social organizations with long term goals and community impact with its latest donation of a projector to St. Martin Santé, the association on the French side focused on diabetes care and education.

The association recently set up a permanent base in Concordia after several years of intense outreach work in the community. This outreach work still continues, but now people living with diabetes or who have been newly diagnosed as well as their family members or wider support network can visit the centre for continuous education on care and treatment.

St. Martin Santé applied for funding for a projector and the all-women Island Gems approved the funding and purchased the needed equipment.

Island Gems Vice President Karine Fleming said she continues to be impressed with the work of St. Martin Santé. “We are happy to provide the projector that will be used in information sessions covering care of the body, cooking healthy and making proper food choices and so much more,” she said.

Fleming along with Island Gems President Alita Singh and Board Member Jody Rosen recently toured the facilities of St. Martin Santé and were very impressed with the organization and volunteers’ drive to holistically assist people with diabetes. They commended the association’s working relationship with doctors and the attention to detail such as providing testing kits for those who do not immediately have access to such medical equipment.

Island Gems funds projects on both side of the island and has been doing so for almost 38 years. The Foundation does not give any cash; instead needed equipment, such as the projector, is purchased and under special circumstance services are paid for.

The Foundation raises funds for its projects at its annual costume gala. This year gala theme is “… Africa!” and will be held on Saturday, April 2, in Captain Oliver’s Restaurant in Oyster Pond. Tickets cost US $125 each and are available from all Island Gems members.
