Prime Minister Kicks Off U2 Can Move Campaign With 3k and 6K Challenge

Free Zumba Sessions on for Friday

The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams kicked off her U2 Can Move health and fitness campaign on Wednesday when she led some thirty Civil Servants and Citizens on a fitness walk around the Great Salt Pond.

The event, dubbed the 3K 6K challenge, was also accompanied by the Minister of Health, Labor and Social Welfare the Honorable Cornelius De Weever and will be held every Tuesday. The PM reiterated the Importance of a healthy lifestyle to those present; "As we now enter into the second month of 2014, it is a fact that most persons usually make New Years resolutions to live a healthier lifestyle. The health of the St. Maarten Community, and that of the civil servants in particular, is a matter of great concern to me. During the course of 2012 and 2013 I have organized several events related to physical fitness and exercise and I would like to continue with these events in 2014 as well. I urge each citizen to be physically active during the New Year and beyond; especially considering that many of us lead a sedentary lifestyle so therefore movement is key along with a proper diet. What matters is that every attempt to exercise or to live a healthy life style by making the correct nutrition, care and movement choices, counts or rather adds up," continued Prime Minister Wescot-Williams.

The PM emphasized that every individual’s competitor should be him or herself. "You need to be able to evaluate yourself based on what you were able to do before starting an exercise program and what you are now able to do. You never compare yourself with others. Max Ehrmann in his poem the Desiderata says that if you compare yourself with others, you may become vain or bitter, or always there will be greater and lesser persons than yourself. Enjoy your achievements as well as your plans.

I urge the whole community, and not only Civil Servants, to join in on the walks on Tuesday and the Zumba sessions on Friday so that together we can reach our goals of living a healthier, happier lifestyle." Concluded the PM.
