GEBE update on water issue on St. Maarten

Last week the island of St. Maarten experienced no water and low water pressures when the Air Fin water plant in Cupe Coy encountered an emergency maintenance shutdown resulting from dirty filters, a team went to work immediately and the plant was up and running in the evening hours. Mr. Maduro, President of the Managing Board of GEBE, continued to state that on Saturday January 11, 2014, approximately 4:30am the plant encountered another problem with a pump where the water production was limited for almost twelve hours. The water plant at Cupe Coy provides water to the Dutch Side of the island of which they have a contract with the Government. GEBE purchases the water from the plant which is the property of Government and GEBE distributes to the community of St. Maarten. If production is not met this will affect the water grid and this is the main consequence of the plant shutting down under two different occasions. It is not up to GEBE but up to the Government to address the production issues with Air Fin. Because, of this problem we have had no water and low water pressure in the different districts during the past week, we hope that the plant will operate much more reliable during this week where GEBE can stabilize the whole water grid. GEBE team has been working diligently around the clock in order to stabilize the grid in all areas. GEBE apologizes for any and all inconvenience this may have caused our consumers.
