Drive Safely as Students Return to School

Heavy equipment prohibited from operating during peak school hours

Another school year started on Monday, and the School Bussing & Taxi Dispatching Inspection Department of Economic Affairs reminds motorists to drive safely. Hundreds of students have started the new school year and many start and end it with a trip on the school bus.

School Bus Section Inspection Head M. Thewet told the Department of Communication (DCOMM) on Monday that she is calling on all motorists to observe the traffic rules throughout the new school year, and of course it is always important to drive cautiously.

Heavy equipment is prohibited from operating during 6.30am to 8.30am and 12.00pm to 2.00pm, and this is according to the Traffic Ordinance.

The School Bus Inspection section is also appealing to parents to speak with their children about proper behavior while being transported on a school bus to and from school.

"Safety is our main concern! Any bus driver who experiences any challenges while bussing school children, are asked to contact the school principal and the School Bus Inspection Section immediately. Everybody has to abide by the rules and regulations governing the safe transport of school children.

"We would like this new school year to be incident free. We don’t want to find school children carrying potential weapons and other things in their bags which do not belong there. You go to school to learn and become productive citizens of your community.

"The Section Inspection is looking forward to the full cooperation of all stakeholders, schools, parents and motorists in order for us to have a safe school bussing year.

"Anybody who sees any unusual behavior on or with a school bus is encouraged to report this to the Inspection Section. Bus drivers are reminded that safety comes first and to practice it at all times.

"Otherwise, have a productive new school year and safe bussing. We are here to ensure reliable, comfortable and safe bussing. I would like to conclude by wishing school management, teachers and parents a safe and productive school year 2013/2014," School Bus Section Inspection Head M. Thewet said on Monday.

Parents who would like bussing information can call the section at telephone number 542-4511 or 542-4509 for additional information.
