Minister of Public Housing, Spatial Planning, Environment and Infrastructure (Ministry VROMI) Hon. Maurice Lake on Monday morning visited Fort Willem along with GEBE management to observe the street light repair program underway. GEBE has already put on the lights for the first phase of Fort Willem Street lights.

One of the key areas for the Minister is the repair of street lights in the various districts. The site visit by the Minister is a follow-up to a meeting Minister Lake had with GEBE management.

"Street lights serve the key purpose of safety and security in the districts. I am looking forward to receiving an action plan from GEBE with respect to the repair of street lights in the different districts. People walking or jogging can see where they are walking and running, and avoid injury during this activity.

"From a security perspective, street lights also serve as a deterrent to would-be burglars. Ft. Willem residents have been suffering with a string of robberies. A lighted area can help prevent car theft and home invasion. Every residential district must be properly lighted," Minister Hon. Maurice Lake said on Monday.

Minister Lake met with GEBE management a few weeks ago regarding the situation of streetlights and GEBE management informed the Minister about the progress so far with their light maintenance plan which is being executed in close consultation with the Department of Infrastructure Management.
