It’s not just abroad that HNP authors and their books have been busy in 2013. This year’s activities have included the recent book prize listing in the UK (Nidaa Khoury); literary recitals in Italy (Amiri Baraka) and the USA (Drisana Deborah Jack); and a literary profile/book review in El Día, Spain (Lasana M. Sekou).
Writers at home are also busy. HNP authors Joseph H. Lake, Jr. and Dr. Rhoda Arrindell stopped in at the Lycée to discuss government and politics, and literary interpretations, with exam students bound for further studies in France. Both experts were invited by the high school’s administration to discuss political science and literature respectively pertinent to both parts of the island. Following her presentation, Arrindell found the students "very articulate about seeing themselves as ambassadors of St. Martin. And after hearing the additional information about their island during the Saturday morning sessions they made a pledge to find out more about the history of St. Martin" from books that have already been published and other sources. Lake is the author of Friendly Anger – The rise of the labor movement in St. Martin and The Republic of St. Martin. Arrindell edited Brother Rich … Creative Writing in St. Martin and co-authored two chapters in Agency in the Emergence of Creole Languages. Copies of three titles published in St. Martin were presented to the students and their teachers, said Jacqueline Sample of HNP.
