Smith, Shillingford top RS50 batting, bowling averages

BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Devon Smith and Shane Shillingford, two key members of newly-minted champions Windward Islands, topped the batting and bowling averages respectively, at the end of the Regional Super50 Tournament which ended on Sunday here.

Smith, a left-handed opener, gathered a tournament-high 348 runs at an average of 58.00 from eight innings.

He struck one of the three hundreds in the tournament, an undefeated 110 against Guyana at the Arnos Vale Multiplex in St. Vincent in the third round, and three half-centuries.

Fellow left-hander Anthony Alleyne, whose 99 helped CCC reach the Final following a stunning semi-final victory over previously unbeaten Trinidad & Tobago, was the only other batsman to average over 50. He scored 158 runs from three innings at 52.66.

Shillingford, the West Indies off-spinner, was almost unplayable, collecting 17 wickets at 10.11 runs apiece from 60 overs in six matches.

He was one of six bowlers to capture five wickets or more in an innings during the tournament, when he snared 6-32 against Leeward Islands at the Vivian Richards Cricket Ground in Antigua.

No other bowler had quite the same impact on the tournament like Shillingford, although six others finished with more than 10 wickets.

Veteran wicketkeeper Carlton Baugh Jr finished with 14 dismissals, the most behind the stumps, while CCC captain Kyle Corbin and Smith ended with seven catches each in the outfield.
