United Booked Double Victory over the Weekend

In a weekend packed with activities, the United Volleyball Club (UVC) scored two victories, both on Saturday.

After the regular training activities on Friday evening, the UVC men team went immediately to their playoff game against the 2011 St. Maarten Volleyball Association defending champions Reptiles. Though the men lost to Reptiles 1-3, barring their chance at the championship title this year, they still have a chance to play for third place in the 2012 tournament when they meet the loser of the Go For It versus Guess What match-up later this week.

Exhausted from their tough match on Friday night, the men joined the rest of the United family on Saturday for the United Academy Open House, which got underway just after 10:00 a.m. Featuring volleyball and other fun games for everyone, starting with the Minis (6 – 12- year-olds), the event turned out to be a success.

The objective of the Open House was to introduce the upcoming United Academy and to register people for the various programs under the Academy, which is a subsidiary of the United Volleyball Foundation that will be offering sports, recreational and educational programs in 2013. At the same time, UVC hoped to raise funds to assist the St. Maarten Academy PSVE campus, where the club trains weekly.

Immediately after the Open House, the UVC Junior girls took off to Gallis Bay, where they played in the opening match of the League du Volley-Ball des Iles du Nord tournament. Though somewhat tired from the Open House activities, the girls had energy left over to pull off a 3-0 defeat against newcomers to the tournament ASCL SXM. Last season, the girls had remained undefeated when the tournament ended suddenly and hope to do the same this season. For the first time this year, UVC will be entering a Junior boys team in the tournament.

UVC is currently on a recruitment drive for all of its programs and extends a heartfelt gratitude to all who helped to make the Open House weekend a success, particularly to DJ Skillz and the parents and supporters of its members.
