Sports Report of Dutch Caribbean Age Group Championship

The event was held in Aruba for athletes ages 11/12 and 13/14. St.Maarten took part with a full team of 4 boys and 4 girls in theses to categories competing in the following disciplines; sprints, long jump, shot put, high jump, hurdles, long distance run, and ball throw.

A selection was made of athletes coming from the following schools, Sister Borgia, Sister Magda, Mac School, St. Dominic & the Milton Peters College. These athletes are Malisca Daal, Vernon Gumbs, Leshawn Brown, Chandra Vanterpool, Tia Gormez, Mishak James, Aisha Violenes, and Quier Hodge along with Norisa Richards and Emmy Fraenk as trainers. This championship was very successful. The athletes return with an overall 3rd place prize. They also succeeded in scoring a bronze medal in the 4x100m relay. Aisha Violenes ran 11.4 seconds in the 80 meter sprint. Mishak Gumbs threw 48 meters in the ball throw. Tia Gomez ran the 80 meter hurdles in 12.5 seconds. Malisca Daal ran her 60 meter dash in 8.8 seconds. Quier Hodge ran his 1000 meter in 3 minutes and 56 seconds. The best athlete performance for St.Maarten was Leshawn Brown, who also scored a bronze medal in the 60 meter sprint, long jump in 4.60 meters and jumped 1.30 meters. In the female category the best athlete was Chandra Vanterpool who scored two 4th places in the ball throw and the 80 meter sprint. Overall country results; 1st Curacao, 2nd Arub, in 3rd St.Maarten and Bonaire 4th, Suriname did not take part. The age group championship is an event which takes every 2 years in Aruba between the Dutch Caribbean islands. This year sponsors making it possible for these athletes to travel to Aruba were Nagico Insurances, PJA2 Radio, St.Maarten Housing, the Daily Herald and Intermar Shipping. The board of the St.Maarten Amateur Athletics Association would like to thank them all for their continuous support in assisting these upcoming talented athletes of St.Maarten.
