ORANJESTAD — During the next three years the government will be investing 1 billion florins to get Aruba out of the crisis, to restore the confidence in the country as reliable economical partner and to improve the quality of life of the citizens.

That money will benefit both the public and the private sector.
This is one of the plans, which the government presented this morning during the opening of the parliamentary year. True to tradition, the Governor read the plans aloud in the States. In the speech, one did not deny the worsened economical situation in which Aruba now finds itself, despite the government indicating several examples of recuperation. For instance, the government succeeded in restoring matters that had gone wrong at the end of the previous period of government under MEP, such as the planned re-opening of Valero, the return of KLM and favorable figures for tourism, the most important economical pillar of the island. However, the government acknowledges this is still not sufficient. One still has to work hard on the government finances and on the social system, in which the government strives to find solutions together with the social partners by means of the Social Dialogue. In that, the most recent success of the Social Dialogue is named as durable example to advance the country. "Aruba is an example of a living democracy, whereby the participation of the shareholders is institutionalized in crucial policy" according to the Governor.
The rest of the plans, which the Governor spoke of, for example the large infrastructural projects from the government, relocating the container harbor, increasing the social welfare payment and introducing of schoolchildren allowance and the drug policy were already announced during the past months.

Around nine-thirty this morning, the in immaculately white dressed marines from the barracks in Savaneta, were casually pacing up and down with their machine guns between Fort Zoutman and the Cabinet of the Governor. After a command from the on duty officer, they stood rigidly in line – in three groups. The officers from Cuerpo Especial Arubano stood there and watched – just like the single marine’s wife, who quickly took a picture. The procession started literally 50 meters around the corner to the parliament building, where the marines were waiting in the sun together with a handful of journalists and the military band, for the arrival of the Governor. The national anthem was struck up in the States’ hall, in the presence of schoolchildren seated in the gallery. All parliamentarians together with all ministers were present in the hall decorated with flowers for the occasion. Minister of Tourism, Otmar Oduber (AVP) was the only one absent. Extra chairs had been placed for members of the Council of State and for invitees such as AIB-director Frendsel Giel, Mambo-chairperson Audrey Laclé and banker Javier Wolter. The usual milliner’s show was modest this year. The Minister of Economical Affairs, Social Affairs and Culture, Michelle Winklaar (AVP) had even chosen to wear a different – but not less elegant – headdress instead of a hat.
