The St. Maarten Sports & Olympic Federation (SMFOF) team received a generous sponsorship courtesy of NAGICO Insurances on Wednesday, to facilitate their upcoming travel to compete at the 2018 Central American & Caribbean Games in Barranquilla, Colombia.
SMSOF, which has been in collaboration with the St. Maarten Young Promising Athlete Program, will compete in the upcoming Games to be celebrated from July 15 – to August 3 and will be travelling with a delegation of youngsters who will be participating in four (4) sporting events namely: Aquatic, Cycling, Judo and Sailing.
CEO of NAGICO; Dwayne Elgin, presented the check to President of SMSOF; Aartwichg Bell and congratulated him and his team on this momentous achievement. “You and your team have made our entire island proud, this is a great moment for St. Maarten and our company (NAGICO) is very pleased be able to do our part by means of this contribution to assist you in getting to the Central American & Caribbean Games.”
This is the first time St. Maarten has made it to the CAC Games, where if the team qualifies, they will move on to the PanAmerican Olympics Games which will be held in Lima Peru in 2019.
“We are very excited for this opportunity and we are confident that our team will qualify at the games in Colombia, then we will move on to the PanAm Olympics next year and from there to the 2020 Olympics in Japan,” Bell explained. “But none of this would have been possible without the help from sponsors and we want to thank NAGICO for their continued consistent support. They have been assisting us throughout the years in various forms, from acquiring uniforms, purchasing practice equipment and even now that we have reached this stage where we will now be on an international stage representing the island.”
A total of seven athletes will be travelling to participate in various sporting disciplines and significantly the St. Maarten flag will be displayed at the event.
“On behalf of the entire NAGICO team, I want to wish the team all the best at the event and we know they will do us proud,” Elgin said.
