Community Outreach Mentoring and Empowerment International (C.O.M.E.) Center, in collaboration with the St. Maarten Development Fund, will begin the third year of its Acquiring Basic Competency Literacy Program on February 3rd, 2015. ABC Literacy program is aimed at persons in the community who would like to improve their literacy skills; reading, writing, comprehension and communication.
The program is designed for individuals 18 years and older, and will consist of individual and small group sessions. A group of dedicated tutors will provide a one-on-one approach, using a wide range of recognized teaching materials, as well as other materials geared to the student’s particular needs and interest.
C.O.M.E. Center is elated that the St. Maarten Development Fund has come on board to assist with eradicating a portion of illiteracy on St. Maarten. Our aim is to help members of our community become literate citizens of this society.
C.O.M.E. Center would like to thank the Rotary Club Sunrise for assisting with the program last year. C.O.M.E is pleased to announce that this Saturday, January 31st, 2015 at 7:00 pm will be the graduation ceremony of some of the students who went through the classes last year. They will all receive certificates for completing various levels.
Classes are held every Tuesday and Thursday, from 7:00 – 9:00 pm, at the Center situated in the Maynard Building, opposite FW Vlaun & Son on the Longwall Road, Philipsburg. Also slated for the evening, will be the graduation of the students from the Sewing Class which took place during last year, certificates of completion will be presented. Additionally, the C.O.M.E Center will launch a new free breakfast initiative as of Monday February 2. Every Monday thereafter, breakfast will be served from 7:30 am to 9:00 am while on Friday February 6, soup will be served from 11:00 pm to 2:00 pm. The soup kitchen will be open every Friday as well.
