Tuesday September 23, 2014 saw the official handing over of the sports materials by USONA to the Minister of Education Culture Youth and Sports Hon. Patricia Lourens-Philip.
These materials have been a long time coming and they were purchased to facilitate the increased upgrading of Sports on Sint Maarten.
Minister Lourens-Philip stated the Government of Sint Maarten looks to upgrade all sporting facilities throughout the country to meet international standards; the opportunity for funding for materials to also be utilized was presented.
The purchase and subsequent delivery of the materials was finalized recently and now the Schools, Associations and Sporting groups in the country are being encouraged to promote sports more and utilize the many pieces of equipment available at the Raoul Illidge Sports Complex in Cay Hill.
The materials that were purchased were selected to facilitate the many sports that are catered to at the Complex including Track & Field (long jump, high jump, pole vault, hurdles, shot put and discus), Soccer, field hockey, basketball, volley ball, netball and tennis.
Minister Lourens-Philip is encouraging schools to utilize the complex and materials available to further develop Physical Education through the introduction of these various sports to the students.
Minister Lourens-Philip added that associations and sporting groups are also being encouraged to book the usage of the complex and utilize the materials that have been purchased to increase sports awareness and participation in the country.
