St. Maarten Lions Club attends Lions Club District Cabinet Meeting in Bridgetown, Barbados

The St. Maarten Lions Club was recently represented in the 1st annual Lions Cabinet Meeting of the new Lionistic year, which took place in Barbados from August 21-24th.                The St. Maarten Lions Club was represented by Club Secretary, C. Larmonie, Club Treasurer, A. Gumbs, and Past District Governor and Lions Quest District Chairperson W. Havertong; C. Buncamper, who is also a member of the St. Maarten Lions Club, attended the cabinet meeting in his capacity as Zone Chairman of Zone 2B, which includes the Lions Clubs of St. Maarten, Anguilla, Saba, and St. Eustatius. Lions from around the Caribbean’s District 60B attended the three-day event which, among other things, emphasized improving the movement’s service to the community through a better understanding of its own members. One club member says: “The event was well-organized and very inspiring. It was good to see Lions from other countries together like that and it’s a reminder that, as Lions, we are not only making a difference in our local community, but around the Caribbean and around the world’. Highlights of the Cabinet meeting included, but were not limited to, business activities such as workshops, a forum, and the district cabinet meeting, as also social activities such as the “Strictly Bajan Affair” night & the Governor’s dinner & dance. The attending members of the St. Maarten Lions Club seized the opportunity in Barbados to exchange ideas and experiences with their peers from other Lions clubs, and specifically relating to the substance abuse problem amongst youngsters in the Caribbean. Locally, the St. Maarten Lions club makes an impact in the community through service, such as donating food baskets, eye-glasses, and more to the less fortunate, social events for the seniors, and health awareness activities. Proceeds from past fund-raising events have been used to donate eye-glasses, sponsorship ofLittle League baseball teams, and the Volleyball Association, renovation of a school basketball court & soccer summer camp, and much more.  The club is currently focused on its signature project of the year, an awareness campaign of Substance use andabuse amongst the local Youth.
