Cervical Cancer Information Session scheduled for Saturday at Dr. Spencer’s Clinic in Saunders

Women, parents with girls aged nine and 10-years, and all those interested are invited by KeLaHa-projects, Dr. Spencer and Collective Prevention Services (CPS) from the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development & Labour, to an information session about cervical cancer prevention and the Human Papilloma Virus (HPV) vaccine on Saturday, 18th January from 9.00am to 12.00pm at Dr. Spencer’s Clinic in Saunders.

Dr. Spencer, KeLaHa-projects, and CPS are collaborating to bring awareness about cervical cancer, HPV and cervical cancer prevention.

The information session fits into the campaign of the Minister of Public Health Hon. Cornelius de Weever under the banner of "Get Checked."

During the session girls aged nine and ten years can receive their HPV vaccine. Women aged 25-65 can get a HPV test and everybody can get information about cervical cancer, PAP-smears, HPV-testing and the HPV vaccine.

CPS is responsible for the National Vaccination Program. The program is designed to prevent the country’s children and population from vaccine preventable diseases.

In September 2013 the Ministry of Public Health, Social Development & Labour introduced the HPV vaccine.

HPV causes cervical cancer which is the second most common cancer in women worldwide. In 2008, there were an estimated 529,000 new cases and 274,000 deaths due to cervical cancer. HPV viruses are common throughout the world.

The primary target group in most of the countries recommending HPV vaccination according to the World Health Organization (WHO) is young adolescent girls.
