"We have been recognizing the importance of future generations to take up leadership positions in the community in general and in government specifically"
The Prime Minister of St. Maarten the Honorable Sarah Wescot-Williams commented recently that she sees the mentoring of young persons to be involved in the field of politics as one of her main priorities as a Prime Minister and as a leader of a political party.
"Within our own political environment, that of the political party that I lead, we have been recognizing the importance of not only for persons to know about the machinations of Government or Politics, but also at looking at future generations to take up leadership positions in the community in general and in government specifically. But in order to do this you need to know what the political reality is.
"Growing up the teaching profession was always my first desire: to be a teacher. In terms of political awareness I think it is so important, and not in the least, that our young people are made aware of how politics and governing works. So many of our people get involved in politics and become totally disillusioned by the reality. People come in with grand aspiration and ambitions and realize that you need to have not a sole individual agenda no matter how well intended, but that we all need to have the need of the people in mind. It should never be about a personal agenda but about the business of the people. And that is our main focus going forward in mentoring the youth of this island who have political aspirations," commented the PM.
