WILLEMSTAD – In Curaçao, only one percent of all tax and premium income is paid in cash. Minister Javier Silvania gave this as an answer to the questions of Member of Parliament for the opposition party MAN, Giselle Mc William.

Silvania is the Minister of Finance and wanted to put an end to cash payments at the Tax Department from the moment he took office. This should reduce the slow processing system and the costs that have to be incurred. Sometimes employees use the money paid in cash for private purposes. They “borrow” the amount of the cash and refund it later.

In 2019 and 2020, one percent of the total tax and premium income was paid in cash. It is estimated that this concerns approximately 1,172 million guilders in taxes and 777 million guilders in premiums.
