On Monday, July 18, Minister Jacobs attended the first Commencement Ceremony of the National Institute for Professional Advancement (NIPA). The NIPA offers advanced vocational education for students from 16 years old and adults already in the workforce. Courses at the NIPA are tailored to the needs and interests of the labor market and the wider St. Maarten community. Some 45 students received their certificates during the ceremony after completing level 1 courses ranging from Maritime, ICT, Culinary Arts and Hospitality. Students who also achieved partial qualification received certificates during the ceremony while continuing the course. Minister Jacobs reminded the students that they have qualified themselves to pursue higher levels of success and happiness in their life no matter what pathway they choose. Jacobs also encouraged students to not spend too much time worrying what other people are doing or let the opinions of others deter them from their dreams and ambitions. The Minister stated that “Everyone has their own path to walk, at a pace suited for their best interest, do not rush. However, do not use the fact that you have time to make your own decision as an excuse to become complacent.”
