Island Gems Charity Foundation recently presented a cheque to Animal Defenders SXM to assist with neuter operations, vaccinations and other medical costs for the stray animals.
The cheque for NAf 900 was written to a vet clinic in keeping with Island Gems policy of not giving money to any organization directly, preferring to pay for services or buy necessary items.
“We are all delighted and very thankful to the Island Gems. The money will be wisely used,” said Mercedes De Windt of Animal Defenders upon receiving the cheque for the vet from long time Island Gems member Anita “Anu” Amarnaney.
The all-women Island Gems Charity Foundation raises the money to support organizations such as Animal Defenders at its single fundraiser held annually. This year’s dinner, themed “Caribbean Creole,” will be held at Captain Oliver’s restaurant on Saturday, March 28.
Well-known St. Maarten performer Leroy “King Beau Beau” Brooks has volunteered his services as master of ceremonies for the dinner. Tickets cost US $125 each and are available from all Island Gems members.
Meanwhile, Animal Defenders is constantly in need of food donations. A daily pet food drive at supermarkets and groceries was recently started and has received much support from residents.
Animal Defenders are fostering of two female dogs with litters. Permanent adoption homes and/or temporary foster homes for the puppies are sought for when they are old enough to be vaccinated and leave their mother. When the puppies have been weaned the mother dog will be spayed. To assist Animal Defenders, call 553-3116.
