President Arrindell thanks Sir Roland Richardson for Exhibiting at House of Parliament

President of Parliament Hon. Gracita Arrindell would like to thank cultural patriot Sir Roland Richardson for his artworks exhibit at the House of Parliament for the past three weeks.

Art works were on public display in the General Chamber, media room, reception area, and the committee meeting room. The paintings were painted on location at various geographic locations on the island – an experience of real places on the island that represent the two sides Dutch and French.

"The display of works will go down in the archives of the House of Parliament for posterity. The exhibit was on display during the visit of His Majesty King Willem-Alexander and Her Majesty Queen Maxima to the House of Parliament.

"According to staff, Dutch Minister of Interior and Kingdom Relations Hon. Ronald Plasterk queried about the painting depicting the flamboyant tree.

Sir Roland Richardson stated that: An extra ordinary opportunity had presented itself to have the exhibition for the King and Queen. I wanted to introduce Sint Maarten to whoever was visiting. I would like to thank the Members of Parliament and the President of Parliament for the invitation that was extended.

"It was an important opportunity and it provides parliament with a cultural dimension. It is good that the House of Parliament does an exhibition from time to time. Being offered a chance to exhibit for the King and Queen was an opportunity of a lifetime. It was an opportunity to shine. I thank my wife Laura and give her credit for her active support in putting together the exhibit."

Richardson in 2007 decorated as Knight in the Order of Oranje Nassau by former Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands for his lifelong artistic contribution to his community. He has also received a lifetime achievement award from the French Government for his work.

Sir Roland Richardson was born on St. Martin and has emerged as a leading artist in the School of Caribbean Art, offering a unique view of his native West Indian culture.

Painting for more than 45-years, Sir Richardson’s work has been exhibited extensively around the globe. His lists of patrons include the late Jackie Kennedy Onassis, Romare Bearden, Martha Graham, Harry Belafonte among many others.
